Blow Molding Techniques for Manufacturing Hollow Plastic Containers

 

Blow molding is a popular and versatile manufacturing process for producing durable,
hollow plastic products. It includes three main types, each suitable for specific
applications:

1. Extrusion Blow Molding (EBM):

Extrusion blow molding involves extruding a molten tube, called a parison, which is
enclosed within a mold. Air is then blown into the parison, causing it to expand and
conform to the mold shape. Once cooled, it solidifies into a hollow container.
Advantages: Cost-effective for high-volume production.
Limitations: Less precise control over wall thickness.
Applications: Large industrial containers, detergent bottles.

2. Injection Blow Molding (IBM):

Injection blow molding starts by injection molding a preform, which is then transferred
into a blow mold. Air is blown into the preform, shaping it into the final product.
Advantages: Higher precision and better surface finish than extrusion blow molding.
Limitations: Primarily suitable for small-sized containers.
Applications: Pharmaceutical bottles, cosmetic containers.

3. Stretch Blow Molding (SBM)

Stretch blow molding involves heating a preform, then applying stretch and blow
molding techniques to produce bottles with increased strength and thinner walls.
Advantages: Produces lightweight, high-quality, and stronger bottles.
Limitations: Higher energy usage.
Applications: PET water bottles, soda bottles.
